Kyra Sundance’s widely popular Canine Conditioning workshops are now available in the palm of your hand, with easy to follow step-by-step instructions and photos. Learn innovative ways to work with props such as hoops, balls, inflatables, and ladders as your dog improves in five components of fitness: flexibility, balance, stamina, coordination, and strength. Physical fitness is just as important for dogs as it is for people. Keeping dogs fit and healthy can increase their lifespan and limit vet visits as they get older. It reduces the risk of sports-related injury, joint problems, and arthritis. Dogs who are conditioned and healthy tend to live happier and more playful lives. Exercise benefits a dog at every life stage. Puppies can improve their coordination, confidence, and mental focus while senior dogs can work on their strength and balance.
Kyra’s Canine Conditioning Workshops
Kyra’s world-renowned books and dog training programs reached over a million people worldwide. An athlete herself, Kyra’s passion for canine fitness led her to develop the widely popular Canine Conditioning Coach workshops which instruct dog owners on correct, safe, and enjoyable techniques for improving their dog’s fitness.
Now, you can get this same knowledge in the palm of your hand, with this book.
A Guided strategy of Conditioning
This book is split into four levels of increasing difficulty. Each level builds upon previous skills with exercises that have been vetted to be effective and safe. Learn innovative ways to work with props such as hoops, balls, inflatables, and ladders as your dog improves in five components of fitness: flexibility, balance, stamina, coordination, and strength. Step-by-step instructions and photos are easy to follow and to execute.

The 5 Fitness Components
FLEXIBILITY – Flexibility describes one’s ability to move joints in a complete range of motion with ease. Kyra’s exercises revolve around stretching that will lengthen a dog’s muscles over time.
BALANCE – The focus of balance is evenly distributing weight in order to maintain upright in a steady position. Balance exercises will aide your dog in avoiding future injuries.
STAMINA – Also known as cardio, a dog must have strong stamina to remain active for a long time. Exercises as simple as jogging will increase endurance, decrease anxiety, and reduce the development of chronic diseases.
COORDINATION – Like humans, dogs need to be familiar with how to move their body and muscles in an orderly manner. Coordination exercises are a key component of fitness therapy, as they allow dogs to learn new motor skills and develop muscle memory.
STRENGTH – Training a dog to build strength and complete tasks such as jumping over a high hurdle will help protect bone health and muscle mass.
Bar Jump – Strength Exercise for Hind Limbs

Step 1
First, you must set the bar at a low height, so you can practice running over it with your dog. Get a running start to foster enthusiasm about the task.

Step 2
Next, change position and run to the side. Use body pressure to guide your dog toward the bar to make the jump. A leash is fine to use as a helpful tool, as long as it is loosely strapped!

Step 3
After a few trial runs, take the leash off your dog and point to where you want him/her to go, as if you are “launching” them in a forward direction.

Step 4
Over time, gradually raise the bar and keep practicing the same “launch” mechanism. For safety precautions, make sure the bar will fall off if your dog knocks it, and check that the traction of the ground will not lead to slipping.

Cavalettis
Technique: Stride Regulation/Rhythmic Movement Training
Cavalettis are a series of small, regularly spaced hurdles used to improve a dog’s balance, adjust the length of stride, and strengthen muscles.
Exercise
1) Set the cavalettis low to the ground & use a treat to lure your dog through. Hold the treat low enough so that your dog can see both the food and his feet.
2) After you’ve practiced a few times, use a leash instead of a treat.
3) Set the cavalettis higher — simply walking your dog through the hurdles will help him improve on his own overtime.
4) Experiment with different spacing.
Extra Information
Cavalettis are often used in sets of six, placed in a row, and can be left at various heights (depending on dog).
